What is Fair Use
|
The World Wide Web did not exist when the United States copyright laws were written. While many countries respect copyright laws, the Internet is not centralized. There are not only different laws, but also jurisdiction issues. RSS feeds didn't exist when copyright laws were written. While supporters feel any content in a feed can be syndicated, other equally active publishers contend that original works are protected.
There is no single agency that has complete control over content or censorship, and it is unlikely that there will ever be one.
|
At this point, the location of web hosts and companies owning domains dictate what laws that are observed. If the website is located on a server in a region that does not recognize or acknowledge the rights
of a copyright holder, the web host will
be less likely to cooperate in removing
the content.
Regardless if you manage an RSS feed or syndicate existing feeds, it is a good idea to become familiar with what constitutes fair use under copyright laws. Fair use allows portions of copy written material to be reproduced or republished without the consent or permission from the
copyright holder. |

Greatest achievement to date?
Saying goodbye to the corporate life back in the UK & emigrating with my husband & two kids to Florida to buy a small boat detailing business. The past 2 & half yrs have been an amazing somewhat " roller coaster " adventure seeing our business grow (with plenty of laughter & tears) from a small service offering to a full repair & custom restoration workshop now manufacturing our own custom built boats.
Character trait you most admire?
Honesty, when you know you are dealing with honesty anything else is a bonus.
|
When are you the most productive?
In the morning I have to have my two cups of English tea (the tea is sent to me by my family back in the UK) before I even try to start the day, I am most productive following this daily ritual until the early evening when I like to unwind with the kids & a G&T!
When are you the most bored?
Sat in my car in heavy traffic not going anywhere!
How do you define success?
Happiness, to enjoy what you are actually doing and where you are in life to me is success. It is so easy to measure success by your wealth, position in a company but without happiness what have you actually really got?
Are you involved in, or have you had any experiences/extra activities that you would recommend to our clients?
Quite simply making time for family and loved ones, it is so easy to get so wrapped up in the business. The hugs from my kids at the end of my day are priceless.
From your experience/expertise, do you have any suggestions for small to medium sized business owners just starting out?
Treat every day as a new day. Be prepared to work hard (if it was so easy to run your own business wouldn't everyone be doing it?) keep your eyes wide open & do not let the little issues you will have to face stop you focusing on the bigger picture. Be determined to succeed.
If you were granted one wish, what would it be?
A magic carpet to speed my trip over the pond to see my Mum & family back home, now that would be brilliant!

Viruses |
Almost everyone has received an email "from a friend" warning us of impending doom. Sometimes the warning is real and sometimes it's not. Usually the email begins, "I found this on my computer and I think I may have accidentally sent it to you. Better check your computer. I'm really sorry." The email finishes up telling you to send this message to everyone in your address book.
Some virus programs appear to have been sent by a friend or a company you have emailed before. Most come from an unknown source. Once opened they work by pulling names out of a computer's address book and using them to further spread the virus.
|
You can set your email to accept plain text only. Block or remove emails that contain file attachments. Some viruses are even programmed to instruct your pc to show you only the plain text but can still infect your computer with hidden malicious code. Spam filters may help, but as a “blanket tool” they often block out a lot of mail you might want.
You can prevent computer viruses by updating Windows regularly and installing virus protection programs. Virus updates should be done at least once a week. Schedule the task time to run automatically, when you're not using your computer. Set up your computer to automatically download updates, but install the updates manually.

Balancing Your Marketing Budget |
Online marketing has two main branches - pay per click marketing and search engine optimization - each becomes defined "sub-industries" in their own right. Pay Per click marketing refers to placing sponsored or paid results on a search engine results page, while search engine optimization refers to enhancing your site so that it performs well in organic or natural listings. The major difference is that the owner pays every time someone clicks, while clicks on a natural listing are free. Research has found that more people click on organic listings than paid listings, but if you want to market your website, both are good marketing tools. A combination of both may be the best option in increasing your brand reach on search engines. Why? The answer lies in examining how people actually use a search engine.
While most website owners think of a typical search process as linear |
(i.e., a searcher moves from the search result to the site and then on to the shopping cart or enquiry form), the reality is quite different. Searchers tend to use the results page as a navigation post to which they return frequently throughout their search session.
They might visit many sites to satisfy their query and refine their search as they go along, creating an increasingly narrow field of results.
Having your company listed on both organic and sponsored listings at different stages of the search fields will reinforce your market presence.
What this means is that although most searchers start by clicking through on organic or natural listings, a good number of searchers will click on sponsored results further along the process if they do not find what they are looking for in natural listings. Having your company listed on both organic and sponsored listings at various stages of the search funnel will reinforce your market presence - and therefore increase the likelihood that a searcher converts into a site customer. |
