Business Cards
What is a business card?
A business card is an extension of you and your company. In most cases simple contact and website information is all that is needed. The history of business cards stretches back to the first recorded history. Ancient Mayans had a cylinder carved from stone they would roll in wet mud and then onto their product to brand themselves. Today not much has changed; only the stone and mud has been replaced by paper and ink.
So what makes a good business card?
First off you need to have your information. This is what people will use it for, it must be clear and easy to find. Then you must consider the graphics & images if you decide to use them. It's important to remember that decorating a business card is a bad idea. Transferring your company's identity to it is your goal.
The next decisions are the most overlooked and usually the most important: choosing a paper weight, texture and print process. If you take a piece of print material that you have never seen before, close your eyes and feel it, you can probably determine its content. For instance a car manual will have a glossy exterior cover, and thin smooth pages inside. These decisions can only be made based on your company and its branding.
How can you have a business card that is unique and not cheesy?
Nothing you can do will be 100% unique- someone has already done it. However you can take ideas and merge them into your own. A business card is 3.5' x 2' inches. You can change the orientation; perhaps have a flip-open card. Or even a die cut giving it unique edges. Just make sure the function of the card is not compromised, or no matter how cool it looks it will be useless.
This makes sense, but why does my business card still not look the way I want it?
